Mihailo Macar -

Mihailo Macar, the stone eater, the listener to lava, the man who carved away everything that was not the truth, did not become a monument. He became a question. And if you press your ear to a cliff face, or run your palm over a river rock, or simply sit very still in a room full of marble, you can still hear him asking it:

“Why do you weep?” the poet asked.

What did they say? That is the question at the heart of his legend. Some say he heard the grinding of continents, the slow crush of mountains being born. Others say he heard the future—the shriek of bombs, the whisper of graves. A young poet once snuck into the ruined church and found Mihailo weeping over a block of marble. mihailo macar
